Todd Strasser:
We Skyped in September with Todd Strasser, author of Boot Camp and the current Abraham Lincoln Award Nominee 2012 titled, Wish You Were Dead. This was to launch a reading promotional of the Abraham Lincoln Illinois High School Readers' Choice Award Nominees. Students that had read Boot Camp wanted to connect with the author Todd Strasser. It was an excellent connection. The only criticism I had of the experience is that we need to figure out a way to pan the room, prep the kids to get over being shy and have questions ready and written if they feel "nervous" in talking in the Skype enviornment.
Dave Cullen, author of Columbine
Teachers who read the book turned up at both campuses to Skype across campus and to Dave Cullen. I think that this created more "static" sound in our experience whereas we didn't have the static issue when Skyping with Todd. Yet, hearing what teachers from both campuses had to ask him was enriching. It would be a good thing to help the novice author have a practice run so that they get comfortable. If your author is not tech savvy then encourage a couple of "practice" sessions. What's in it for them? Experience! Then they can charge to Skype with someone else :)
